Matter Substance Sun Creme for Baby

Quick Overview

Chemical-free, this sunscreen keeps delicate skin protected by creating a natural physical barrier to protect against the elements.

Safe to use on babies 3m+ because it isn't chemical based (see note below on Sunscreen Facts).

  • Developed by an herbalist based in Toronto, the natural oils of shea butter, sesame seed oil and jojoba oil moisturize sensitive skin.
  • A botanical blend of calendula, grape seed and green tea extracts soothe over-exposed skin.
  • Water resistant, this formula is safe for children of all ages.

Note: Sunscreen creams are quite thick and may leave a white residue. This is the active zinc oxide, which acts as a reflector to the sun’s rays. (To reduce the whitening effect, rub in until the whiteness dissipates.) This is normal and even helpful, since it can show you what areas on your child have good coverage.

Q. What is the difference between a physical barrier versus a chemical barrier sunscreen?

A.  A physical barrier sunscreen (such as Substance Sun Care for Baby) physically blocks the sun’s UV rays through the use of titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide.

Often, sun blocks containing these two ingredients have been messy and opaque. Substance Sun Care Cream however, uses micro-ionized zinc. This we feel is the safest and most effective option. It creates the same physical barrier, but is more transparent and less messy when rubbed in.

Physical barriers also have the added benefit over chemical sunscreen of blocking UVA rays. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin’s surface, increasing the risk of cellular skin damage. Most chemical sunscreens do not block UVA rays effectively. The best-known and proven UVA protection is provided by products that contain zinc oxide.

Furthermore, chemical sunscreens can be an irritant to sensitive skin. Zinc, on the other hand, possesses many beneficial properties for sensitive skin including being anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory.

Awesome! Review by Kimberly

I love using this sunscreen on my kids and even for myself. It does go on really thick so I find you don't need a lot of it. The fact that it's safe and gentle on babies skin is a must in my eyes and it actually does something for you instead of the cheap stuff you buy in department stores. I recommend this product and I always boast about it at my daughter's daycare. (Posted on 2016-04-09)

We have used this for almost 4 years with my son and have never had a burn. It is great natural product that I know is safe and I have even begun using it on my own skin. (Posted on 2014-03-23)

I bought this for my daughter, and it is a great natural product to have on hand for sun protection when keeping your little one in the shade isn't an option. She loves being outside and playing in the water, and knock on wood, we haven't had a burn yet! :)

There is a bit of white residue left when applying but nothing a little extra rubbing won't fix! (Posted on 2013-07-15)
